Every great coach has an origin story, and for Coach Jay, it all started under the Arizona sun. What began as a simple company “team bonding” activity unexpectedly sparked a new lifelong passion.
“I’ll admit, I didn’t exactly jump at the idea of playing pickleball that day,” Jay laughs. “But with my tennis background from high school and college, I realized pretty quickly that the game made sense for me. I loved it right off the bat.”
Encouraged by fellow instructor Julie Graham from RT.12 Pickle, Jay saw an opportunity to combine his corporate experience—leading and managing sales teams—with his natural gift for connecting with others. The transition to becoming a certified pickleball coach felt like destiny. “I realized I could take my skill for motivating people and bring that energy to teaching this fast-growing sport,” he says. “I love watching students’ pickleball journeys take off.”
Finding Fun in Fundamentals
Ask anyone who’s taken a lesson with Coach Jay, and they’ll tell you that his coaching style is anything but ordinary. He builds every session around three key elements: keeping learning fun, focusing on sound technique, and staying connected through ongoing support.
“Making it memorable is huge for me,” Jay explains. “I use unique teaching techniques—sometimes I even sing to my students! But behind that fun is repetition and coach-led play that make those skills stick.”
And since Jay often works at the front desk at RT.12 Pickle when he’s not coaching, he gets a chance to see his students both on and off the court. “That’s one of the best parts—I can follow up, check in, and really watch people grow over time,” he adds.
Shaping the Future of Pickleball
As a PPR Certified Instructor and a PPR Certified Youth Development Coach, Jay has a special investment in the sport’s next generation. One of his favorite moments in class comes when he tells young players about Anna Leigh Waters, the prodigy who turned pro at just 12 years old.
“The kids love hearing that story,” Jay says. “When I tell them she’s now one of the best in the world—and that she earns millions doing it—their eyes light up! It’s inspiring to see their excitement and hunger to learn.”
A Lesson in Balance and Perseverance
For Jay, pickleball mastery isn’t just about hits and rallies. His favorite concept to teach is balance, both physical and mental.
“This game is built on mistakes,” he explains. “The fewer you make, the more you win. Being balanced and ready for the next shot gives you the edge. As one of my favorite coaches used to say, ‘It’s better to be ready way too early than a little too late.’”
When students get frustrated, Jay emphasizes resilience. “Feeling stuck is part of the game,” he says. “The key is learning quickly and trusting your drilling. The next point is always the most important one.”
Watching Young Players Shine
Coach Jay’s enthusiasm for his junior clinics is contagious. His sessions begin with fun stretches and warm-ups, then move into games that test accuracy and creativity. Challenges like “fast hands” at the kitchen line keep things competitive, and he wraps up each week by celebrating students with medals and awards for their progress.
“What I love most is watching their progression. When a kid hits a great shot and smiles because they know they’ve improved,” Jay says. “It’s incredible to see their confidence build, sometimes after just a few classes.”
The Takeaway: Learning Beyond the Game
When asked what he hopes every student remembers after working with him, Jay doesn’t hesitate.
“First, know how to score the game, it’s one of the most confusing parts for new players,” he says with a grin. “And second, understand court awareness. Know where you need to be, what your next step is. If they walk away with those two things—and a love for the game—I’ve succeeded.”
From his first unexpected rally in Arizona to his role inspiring players at RT.12 Pickle, Coach Jay’s journey embodies everything that makes pickleball special, community, growth, and joy in every swing. Whether he’s helping adults rediscover their competitive spark or guiding juniors as they chase big dreams, Jay brings energy, encouragement, and expertise to every lesson. His passion not only builds skills but also reminds every player that pickleball isn’t just a game, it’s a lifelong journey of progress and fun.
