Player Community Spotlight: Kevin Wentzell

Kevin Wentzell

Kevin Wentzell, also known as Chief, leads the Corridor 9 pickleball group, which consists of about 60 players from the boroughs and has been active for around three years. When maintaining the outdoor courts became too challenging, Kevin stepped up to lead the group and transitioned their play to indoor courts.

Kevin’s pickleball journey began just before his retirement in 2016. A lifelong athlete, he played football, basketball, and baseball in his youth before dedicating over 30 years to competitive racquetball. Joining a pickleball group in Marlborough, known for attracting skilled players from all over Central Massachusetts, marked his entry into the sport. Transitioning from racquetball to pickleball was a challenging but gratifying experience for Kevin, “learning the game, it’s like going from checkers to chess”, Kevin said “I could keep up with most of the players, but really skilled players I had a difficult time with because they had more pickleball skills.”

Kevin described his most memorable pickleball experience as finding his competitive groove, “when I started to beat people on a regular basis, it was gratifying.” His toughest yet most valuable experience was confronting the reality of not always winning, a shift from his racquetball days when he was known as the "villain" who wore down his opponents. Despite this, “I was the happiest villain in the world,” Kevin said, he embraced the new challenges and community with enthusiasm.

Interestingly, Kevin earned the nickname "Chief" in high school, inspired by the character Chief from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and his favorite wrestler, Chief Jay Strongbow – both figures representing quiet determination and resilience.
